May 12: Weekly Reading- Healing of the Blind Man; The Courageous & Insight Post by Kim Feld

Weekly Reading: John 9:1-12

Monday Reflection

God’s Power Revealed in Weakness: When Jesus healed the man born blind, He explained that the man’s condition was not due to sin but so that the works of God might be displayed in him. This teaches us that sometimes God uses our weaknesses or struggles to reveal His power and bring glory to His name.

Monday Verse

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)

Monday Questions

Are there areas of weakness or difficulty in my life where I can invite God to display His power? How can I trust God more in my struggles?

Monday Insight Post

I can’t imagine what it would be like to experience sight for the first time as an adult. Was his sight returned quickly, or did it return gradually like a curtain being pulled back? His senses must have been overwhelmed as he began to connect sight with smells and sounds. Had he ever imagined what familiar people and places looked like?

In Jesus’ day, physical infirmities like blindness were thought to happen because of sin. Jesus refuted that idea, adding that the man’s blindness provided an opportunity for God’s power to be displayed. What if I looked at any challenge in my life as the same kind of opportunity?

When we surrender our weaknesses to God, His power transforms them into opportunities for growth. The apostle Paul, despite his ailment that he called a ‘thorn in his flesh,’ experienced this transformative power. He asked the Lord to remove it three times but was refused. Let’s take a look at this passage:

7…Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10, NLT)

What would it take for me to view my challenges as opportunities for God to demonstrate His strength? It would require genuine humility, a virtue that Paul exemplified. He understood that weakness is not something to be ashamed of, but rather an opportunity for God’s strength to shine. As Paul said, ‘When I am weak, then I am strong.’

Weaknesses or challenges can take many shapes and forms. Maybe it’s dealing with a physical challenge like the blind man, or the struggle of chronic pain, addiction, or any number of unhealthy patterns and strategies. No matter the situation, the question at the heart is, “Is Jesus big enough to handle this?” The blind man would say yes. In his words, “…I was blind, and now I can see!” (John 9:25b, NLT)
