June 23: Weekly Reading- Healing of the Boy with a Demon; The Unyielding & Insight Post by Kim Feld
Weekly Reading: Matthew 17:14-20, Mark 9:14-29, Luke 9:37-43
Monday Reflection
Faith Overcomes Obstacles: In this story, the disciples were unable to heal the boy because of their lack of faith. Jesus teaches that even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains and overcome any obstacle. This encourages us to trust in God’s power, no matter how challenging the situation.
Monday Verse
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NLT)
Monday Questions
Are there areas in my life where I am struggling to trust in God’s power? How can I grow my faith, even in small steps, to overcome obstacles?
Monday Insight Post

I have really wrestled with these passages this week. I contend with them every time I read them. Jesus’ words read as harsh to me, and I try to reconcile them with what I know to be true of Him. Interestingly enough, as I have pondered and processed these passages, I recognize that I have zero issues with the Jesus who turns over tables in the temple. But the Jesus that calls out a lack of faith and unbelief is harder. Maybe because it hits closer to home for me.
We get a glimpse of Jesus’ humanity in these passages. He has just come from a fantastic experience on the mountain where Peter, James, and John have seen His glory. It’s interesting to note that all three biographies that record this event place them after the transfiguration. The way events are recorded in each of the four biographies is not always the same, so it catches my attention when they perfectly align as this one does. Jesus comes to the bottom of the mountain and finds chaos. The disciples have been unable to heal a young boy, and Jesus voices His frustration with their lack of faith and the lack of faith of the whole generation of people. What’s it going to take for their faith to take root and grow?
As we read the biographies of Jesus, He seems to crack down the hardest on lack of belief and faith. Maybe because everything else hinges on the amount we possess. Is Jesus enough? Is Jesus alone, not plus anything else, enough to get me through whatever comes my way and work in ways that would not have been possible otherwise?
Last week, we saw Jesus walking on water and Peter starting strong but sinking beneath the waves as he took his eyes off Jesus. In Rusty’s message yesterday, he challenged us to consider whether the obstacles we face have become bigger than Jesus. It was a convicting and challenging message that I encourage you to go back and listen to if you missed it. Are our eyes fixed on Jesus, fully believing that He can see us through?
There is so much pain and suffering in our world today and in many lives. There’s no greater time for us to exercise our prayer muscles as we lift up each other and pray for steadfast faith in the only One who can save.
