Friday Reflection

Jesus’ Compassion in Healing: Jesus’ response to the desperate father and the suffering boy shows His deep compassion. He is always willing to meet us at our point of need and bring healing, whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual.

Friday Verse

How kind the Lord is! How good he is! So merciful, this God of ours! Psalm 116:5 (NLT)

Friday Questions

How can I trust in Jesus’ compassion for me in my struggles? How can I extend the same compassion to others who are in need of healing or support?

You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” Matthew 9:20 (NLT)

See? Look at that! You only need a little dot of faith to move a mountain! A dot sure sounds achievable–even personalized mug ready! I can read this verse to mean that God can use my faith “no matter how small,” like those loaves and fishes. It is true, but the bigger truth is a matter of scale. In that scene moments before, the disciples very publicly fail to heal a boy possessed by an unclean spirit.

The men who breathed the same air as Jesus 24/7 couldn’t muster up enough faith for a mustard seed. How could I possibly do better? Gaining a mustard seed of faith may even be outside my human capability—and that could stop me in my tracks. How can I give God the big faith he wants when I can’t even manage a teeny one?

My answer is in the boy’s father’s response (Mark 9). The father said, “I believe. Help my unbelief!” He asks Jesus for faith, and Jesus gives it to him. What a generous model for how God wants us to approach Him—both desiring and expecting!

God wants you to want to have faith, and He wants you to ask Him for it. He also wants you to have bigger fruits of the Spirit, more blessings, more holiness. He wants to tell you what He thinks about you, share new insights with you, and show you how to help others. When God gives us His faith, our goal of a mustard seed is no problem. It’s not even a goal anymore.

If a mustard seed’s worth of faith can move mountains, what can an earth-sized amount do? Father, show me.
