Jesus Cares About Our Needs: At the wedding in Cana, Jesus performs His first miracle by turning water into wine, demonstrating that He cares even about the everyday concerns of life. This miracle shows that Jesus is attentive to both the small and significant needs of those He loves.

This week’s reading recounts Jesus’ first miracle: turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. There’s so much to unpack in this story, which is one of my favorites. I love the interaction between Jesus and Mary and Mary’s full trust that Jesus could make things right. To run out of wine at a wedding during Jesus’ day would have been a huge social blunder. One that would likely be remembered in a small community. Not a great way to start your marriage!
The six stone water jars held water for ceremonial hand washing. The passage tells us that each jar held somewhere between 20 and 30 gallons of water. When Jesus turned the water into wine, the result was 120–180 gallons of the finest wine. Not only was the couple spared the embarrassment of running out, but they were also elevated in the eyes of those in attendance for serving something that would likely have been costly to obtain.
We see Jesus’ power to transform in this miracle. He can make wine from water, bring beauty from ashes, and turn the worst sinner into an obedient follower. All that is true, but I also see that He brings abundance.
Look at these incredible words from Paul in Ephesians:
20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” Ephesians 3:20 (NIV)
Paul says Jesus is able to do more than we can even think to ask or imagine. I’ve got a pretty vivid imagination, but Jesus could still go bigger and better. But why do I so often put limits on what I think He can do? I will wrestle and struggle in my own power until, in utter exhaustion, I reach out to grab hold of His.
If I am seeking and following Jesus with all I’ve got, He will provide all I need. I can trust Him to not leave me hanging. No situation or circumstance is too big for Him. I can depend on Him in the little things as well as the big ones.
Jesus’ first miracle was a remarkable act, demonstrating that He cares about the smallest details of our lives. He didn’t have to intervene, but He did. His miracle may have been hidden from many, but Mary, His disciples, and the servants all knew. He provided abundantly.
