Friday Reflection

Boldness in Sharing the Gospel: Sharing our faith boldly shows our confidence in Christ.

Friday Verse

After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:31 (NLT)

Friday Questions

How can I be more bold in sharing the Gospel with those around me, trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit to speak through me? What steps can I take to confidently proclaim my faith, knowing that boldness in sharing the Gospel reflects my trust in Christ?

Our study for today asks, “How can we be bolder in sharing the Gospel?” I imagine if I witnessed a paralyzed man stand up and walk, I’d tell that story very boldly. In everyday life, though? Not so bold.

Thankfully (for me, since I’m writing on this topic!), these are the very questions our Unbound prayer group wrestled with on Monday. Jesus tells us to share our faith experiences with others. He wants us to reflect His love by praying for and encouraging people. We know the social consequences of being bold with your faith result from people being uncomfortable. People-pleasing is a strong motivator for me, but it’s a shallow goal. Better to be a God-pleaser, right?

The risk-benefit ratio goes down further when you realize that God sets us up for His success, which looks to Him like advancing His Kingdom and loving others. All we are responsible for is taking that first step. Our group envisioned God as a delighted father helping his toddler learn to walk: the baby goes down; the father gently lifts her up with a proud smile. We imagined God saying, “Just look at you! You’re obeying me!”

You don’t have to orchestrate an opening or prepare a fancy argument; the Holy Spirit will tell you what to say and when. Don’t be afraid of sounding stupid, either. God transforms your words to touch that person’s heart in a way meaningful to them.

Sometimes I beat myself up when I miss the opportunities God gives me, either by not spotting them in time or by my outright rejection. I’m disappointed in myself, but God’s not. I didn’t miss my moment forever, and I can’t ruin God’s plans. He will keep giving me new chances to step out— or He might even return that person to me for my second chance! When we are serious about following Him, we will never miss out on the blessings God has for us, and He will keep giving us opportunities to obey Him.

In the end, our group decided that we can confidently proclaim our faith by making ourselves available to God, which we do through prayer and listening to the Holy Spirit. Taking the first step is the only thing we need to do—or even can do.  I’m so grateful that He is a God of unlimited chances.
