Weekly Reading: Luke 24:13-35

Wednesday Reflection

God’s Word Brings Understanding and Clarity: As Jesus explained the Scriptures to the disciples, their hearts burned within them, and they began to understand the true meaning of His life and resurrection. This teaches us that Scripture has the power to open our minds to God’s truth when we seek understanding.

Wednesday Verse

The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand. Psalm 119:130 (NLT)

Wednesday Questions

Am I seeking deeper understanding of God’s Word in my life? How can I better engage with Scripture?

Jesus is so different than other leaders. We live at a time (it’s probably been this way all along, but it seems more common now) where the measure of a leader is what lengths they will go to for self-promotion, attention-getting, putting down opponents, and all sorts of audacious acts done to generate personal publicity. Jesus doesn’t play that game at all. Sure, He got a lot of attention, but it was always with two aims in mind: (1) what would honor His father, and (2) what would be loving for others. The ultimate proof of this was His decision to sacrifice His life on the cross.

In our reading today, we see this in Jesus’ interaction with the two broken-hearted men who were leaving Jerusalem, following Jesus’ execution. As He hears them relate the events, including rumors of Jesus being raised from the dead, but knowing their doubts, “Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. 26 Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” 27 Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” Luke 24:25-27 (NLT)

In His clear but firm explanation of what the Bible teaches, Jesus is focused on helping them discover the truth and God’s plan for them and the world. This is the kind of leader—one who puts the needs of others above their own— who makes following a privilege and a joy!

Later in the evening, we hear that they discover the stranger is Jesus, “As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. 31 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him!” Luke 24:30-31.  I have wondered if, as He handed them the bread, they saw the scars from His crucified hands, and then it was crystal clear to them who He was.
