What is God calling me to obey, even though it’s challenging? How can I remain joyful and committed to following God’s Word, trusting that obedience will lead to His blessings?

When Jesus commissions the 72 to go, These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. 3 Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.” Luke 10:2-3 (NLT) Obeying God is always the right thing to do, always. But it is seldom the easy and comfortable way to go. These ambassadors are entering a territory that will include both happy receptions and enemy attacks. Jesus doesn’t sugar-coat this at all. He wants His followers to be aware, alert, and ready. I deeply appreciate this. All too often, we are presented with opportunities that are deliberately described in ways meant to entice us by leaving out the less appealing aspects. Becky and I have recently watched some commercials that describe a product as great and inexpensive, but in the fine print (and not verbally stated), it reveals that the great price is an introductory offer for a short while, and then the real price kicks in. The idea is to get you in the door with the attractive part of the pitch. Jesus doesn’t do this. He is upfront, honest, and trustworthy. He explains that there will be trouble and adversaries, and He also makes promises that He will be with them and meet all their needs. It is in facing difficulty that we learn to utterly depend on God, and in that process, our faith grows and the message we share is confirmed.

Having a leader who can be trusted is a powerful incentive. Jesus will never mislead, twist the truth, or retract a promise. He has proven Himself trustworthy, and even when He leads us into tough circumstances that are anything but easy, we can know that ultimately the result will be good for us and others.

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”  Romans 8:28 (NLT)
