Game On: The Quest For The Ultimate Gold Medal

It takes many different types of training to perform at our best.

We’re just weeks away from the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics. As that time draws near, these athletes are relying on many things to help them compete successfully. Their training began years earlier as they worked to assemble the building blocks necessary to reach the status of elite athlete. As followers of Jesus, we are training for a very unique race…one that ends with the ultimate reward. Over the next eight weeks, we’ll look at how our conditioning really isn’t all that different.

Week 1 Message- Training: Prepare Well

Date- June 25th & 26th, 2016

Key Verse(s)- 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Speaker- Rusty Coram

Our training begins the moment we say yes to Christ. The more time we spend understanding the basics (reading Scripture, praying, connecting with other Christians), the more successful our training will be.

Week 2 Message- Dedication: Do Your Best

Date- July 2nd & 3rd, 2016

Key Verse(s)- Joshua 1:8-9

Speaker- Rusty Coram

We don’t hear of many overnight success stories in sports. The truth is, there’s usually a long history of hard work, practice, pain, study and diligence. It can be a bumpy road at times. Success comes when we don’t give up and always give our best.

Week 3 Message- Honesty: Play by the Rules

Date- July 9th & 10th, 2016

Key Verse(s)- Psalm 15:4c

Speaker- Rusty Coram

It’s tempting to want to take shortcuts to help guarantee our success. There are endless stories of heroes whose careers came to a crashing halt by either breaking the rules or artificially enhancing their performance. While they may have experienced short-term gain, the truth is cheaters never win.

Week 4 Message- Teamwork: Shared Goals

Date- July 16th & 17th, 2016

Key Verse(s)- Ephesians 4 (several verses in this chapter),  1 Corinthians 12:12-27, Romans 15:5

Speaker- Rusty Coram

Yes, it’s cliché, but there is no ‘I’ in team. Our Christian faith places us on the ultimate team, with the ultimate coach and a very real adversary. We were created as unique individuals, and only together can we effectively conquer our common enemy.

Week 5 Message- Sportsmanship: Keeping Cool On & Off the Field

Date- July 23rd & 24th, 2016

Key Verse(s)- Matthew 5:16, 1 Corinthians 11:1

Speaker- Rusty Coram

Being a good sport on the field is important. It’s important to remember there are many who aren’t as far along that are following our example. Our behavior is important – even when we think nobody is watching.

Week 6 Message- Obedience: Listen to the Coach

Date- July 30th & 31st, 2016

Key Verse(s)- Matthew 11:29, John 14:21, Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 24:16

Speaker- Rusty Coram

Behind every great athlete is a coach who not only teaches strategy and etiquette, but also provides encouragement and correction. We have a heavenly coach, with the ultimate game plan. Our job is to listen and follow!

Week 7 Message- Focus: Don’t Let Fear or Pride Derail You.

Date- August 6th & 7th, 2016

Key Verse(s)- Isaiah 41:10

Speaker- Rusty Coram

It can be hard to stay focused when distractions come knocking at our door. Often times, we’re our own worst enemy as fear and pride try to steal our focus and derail our progress.

Week 8 Message- Perseverance: If You Fall…Get Back Up

Date- August 13th & 14th, 2016

Key Verse(s)- Romans 15:4

Speaker- Rusty Coram

The definition of perseverance is to not give up, no matter how things are going. Even when we don’t win, we learn valuable lessons.
