Meditation is a fancy word for focused attention. We all do it. A perfect example is when we are worried and have our attention on something we fear or dread. As we launch our new year, we are looking at focusing our attention on Jesus and the remarkable fact that He has “all authority in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:19) and at the same time invites you and me to come to Him with all our burdens and He will take care of us. We are used to seeing people and institutions use their power for their own advantage, but with Jesus, we have someone who operates very differently. He invites all of us to come to Him and discover His power and presence so that we can find rest, peace, and hope. Imagine this: the most powerful person is telling us that He cares and is ready to help. All that we are required to supply is humble surrender to Him. “Come to me” is an invitation that, if we accept, can change everything. This week, I am giving my focused attention to Jesus’ invitation, imagining Him standing at a door that I have knocked on. He opens it and, with a smile, asks me to come in and unload all the weight He sees that I am carrying. What an amazing thing to know and remember.
